Pardee educates parents about ‘Purple Crying’

Monday, November 28th, 2011

On Friday last week, the Times-News covered a great story about a very important initiative to end Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Pardee Hospital is raising awareness of the Period of Purple Crying this month. Pardee Auxiliary members and community knitters and crocheters have knitted more than 45 purple-colored baby caps to be distributed during the month.

“There were times I was on the brink of insanity,” Stepp said. “Sometimes, our expectations of a newborn are unrealistic. Your baby will cry, and that is normal.”

This time of their life is called the “Period of Purple Crying,” coined by the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome. To help parents understand and get through the stage, the center decided to lead a national awareness effort, providing resources such as DVDs and literature to medical facilities and parents.

Pardee employees build house for Habitat for Humanity

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Pardee employees joined Habitat for Humanity to build a house for a family in need October 1.

Over 50 employees and their spouses participated in building the house that took most of the day to complete.  Neighboring families in the community also helped and showed their support. The house is now located in Shuey Knolls Subdivision near Edneyville.

“This was a way for Pardee employees to help a family get a new start and the satisfaction that comes from being a part of a project that is so important to our community.  Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful group of people making a positive influence on Henderson County.  Alan Stissel, site facilitator for the project, was fantastic as a leader for our group. Projects like this one are what Pardee is all about, we are all a part of the community and we love to give back to the community in many ways,” said Tim Auwarter, director of Director of Rehab Services at Pardee Hospital.

Habitat for Humanity builds homes for families who are living in inadequate conditions through community outreach with businesses and volunteers.  The organization accepts applications for families in need of housing as well as members of the community who would like to donate their time to help. To apply for housing needs or to volunteer, please visit www.habitat-hvl.org.

Pardee volunteers build a house :: Habitat for Humanity

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

This last weekend, our team of over 45 volunteers from Pardee showed up on a chilly Saturday morning to work on a Habitat for Humanity house in Shuey Knolls.

That morning we stood gripping cups of steaming coffee, huddling around the foundation of the house listening to Alan from Habitat give instructions for the day. After the briefing, we set forth armed with tool belts stuffed with nails and wielding hammers to raise the walls and get the house ready for trusses. The team worked all day and had a great time with the folks from Habitat.

Thanks again to everyone who helped and took part, it was a huge team effort and the results were fantastic. For information on volunteering or on the application process for home ownership, click on the links below:

Employee Giving at Pardee sets the pace with United Way

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Pardee Choice is an employee giving campaign that combines employee giving with the United Way campaign. It gives each of us a chance to improve our hospital and help others in need in the community.  Together we raised more than $147,000 for Henderson County through employee pledges, one-time donations, special events, sponsorships and corporate giving. There is a story in the Times-News on this campaign right here.

These donations to Pardee Choice support Pardee’s patients and help purchase medical tools and enhance service that extend and save lives. You can see this year’s Pardee Choice video by clicking here.

In the last two years alone, Pardee Hospital purchases from Pardee Choice employee donations have paid for a bladder scan, construction for a CT scanner, software tools for Ortho surgery, refurbished the Women and Children’s Waiting Room, helped complete renovations in the Ortho wing and purchased fetal monitors.

Last year, Pardee Hospital employees gave more money to United Way than any other employer in Henderson County and earned us the title of top community pacesetter.  we are proud to be the pacesetter again this year.

April Fuels on April Fools

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Our friends over at ECO of WNC have a great campaign launching on April 1st. They are asking everyone to join them on April 1, 2011 in carpooling, walking, biking, telecommuting or, just staying at home. Here at Pardee we are participating too.

They are devoting this day to learning how to improve the way we get to work or organize our shopping and other expeditions. Here are their transportation recommendations:

Carpooling

  • The benefits are many. For those of us who drive every day, we will save money in gas and in the wear and tear of our vehicle.
  • By sharing a ride, we endure less stress and keep Henderson County’s air cleaner.
  • We can email or call our coworkers or neighbors or school associates to say that we want to carpool. We can also organize a carpool through our employer, neighborhood association, local food shop or coffee shop.

Walking

  • If possible, let’s walk. It improves blood pressure, reduces joint pressure and the risk of stroke, and keep excess weight at bay. We will also get a better night’s sleep, fell more relaxed, and have a better memory. Walking will keep us strong and fit and give us an opportunity to meditate, enjoy our surroundings and connect with our bodies.

Bicycling

  • Riding a bike to work or to run errands will produce NO air pollution – it is the most energy efficient form of transportation. It will save  money, improve your health, and it is fun. Possibly we may even get to our destination faster than if we drive but certainly we will be able to park more easily and cheaply.
  • Let’s select a route, consider a bike buddy, wear a helmet, and tell our supervisor that we will be biking to work on April 1.
  • Employers, please note: people who cycle to work regularly are more productive and take less sickleave.

Telecommuting

  • Working from home saves energy. We won’t be using a gasburning vehicle to get to work or following a dress code. Our schedule will be flexible enough to make and keep personal appointments. As parents we’ll feel good about being available for our kids if there’s a medical or other emergency.

Driving Less

  • For things like errands, shopping, buying groceries, or getting together with friends, let’s plan ahead. We can telephone a store to make sure it stocks what we need. We can ride with friends, combining and consolidating our errands. April 1 will be a good day to try out our local bus system the Apple Valley Transit.

Sign up to do your part on April Fuels Day!

Thanks to all, for a successful CPR Saturday

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Our partnership with Henderson County Red Cross, enabled us to train 188 people in CPR techniques. You can find detailed coverage on blueridge.com here. We couldn’t have done it without all the volunteers and support of the Red Cross, Pardee Health Education Center,  Mountain 1st, Girl Scouts and YMCA.

Hopefully we’ll see you all next year for another great event.

Regionally we trained  528 people in CPR and 154 in compression Only CPR for a grand total of 682.
