They live without pain
Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011Peter Mangone M.D., pioneers arthroscopic lateral ankle ligament reconstruction
Friday, March 25th, 2011Peter Mangone, M.D., with Blue Ridge Bone and Joint in Hendersonville, has been recognized as a pioneer in arthroscopic lateral ankle ligament reconstruction. This comes after the acceptance of a manuscript he co-authored entitled ‘Arthroscopic Lateral Ankle Ligament Reconstruction’ that will be featured in Techniques in Foot and Ankle Surgery later this year.
Mangone began his research in 2007. “I knew there had been great advancements in arthroscopic techniques for instability over the last twenty years in other joints such as the shoulder and the knee. I felt it was time to start bringing those concepts to the world of foot and ankle surgery,” said Mangone.
Dr. Mangone has also announced his partnership with Jorge Acevedo M.D., of West Palm Beach, Florida, to further develop this technique. Together, they plan to start hands-on training of this advanced arthroscopic technique to other surgeons in the United States as well as internationally later this year.

15th Annual Tournament of Champions a Success
Tuesday, May 18th, 2010The 15th Annual Pardee Foundation Tournament of Champions took place on Monday, May 17, at Kenmure Golf and Country Club. The event raised $93,236.88 to assist with the planned renovations to Pardee Hospital’s nationally recognized orthopedic unit.
This year’s event featured a new 9-hole tournament in the morning with 27 golfers, followed by the traditional 18-hole tournament in the afternoon with a full field of 130 players. More than 40 volunteers ensured that the event ran smoothly. This event has raised more than $1 million since 1996 to support Pardee Hospital facilities, equipment and programs.
Proceeds from the tournament will help fund planned renovations to Pardee’s orthopedic unit which is consistently benchmarked among other top orthopedic programs in the nation. These renovations include upgrades to the current 25 patient rooms and the addition of five patient rooms, enlargement of group therapy space, equipment purchases for orthopedic surgeries and a new conference area. All of these renovations will support the growth in orthopedic and spine procedures to address the growing needs of our community.
Gladys Nesbitt, nursing director of orthopedics at Pardee Hospital, said, “As the number of patients in our Joint Camp program has steadily increased, it has become readily apparent that our facilities at Pardee need to be expanded and renovated. These changes will allow us to offer even more services to patients who chose our destination for their surgical needs.”
Thank you to the many sponsors, volunteers, committee members, golfers, and staff who made this event such a great success.
Pardee Orthopedics receives words of thanks
Thursday, April 8th, 2010Thanks to everyone on Pardee’s Orthopedic Center of Excellence for the great care I got after my knee replacement. I don’t remember everyone’s name, but I do remember Cathy, Miranda, Stephanie and Nina. Thanks too to Angela for keeping everything at the front desk in order. Thanks to Scott for relaying all the information to me and deepest thanks to the entire physical therapy staff – Barb, Tom and Courtney, for all the exercises that got me moving again. And last but not least, thanks to Gladys, you have a great team and should be very proud of everyone on it. I am sure they are all proud of you. I think this says it all – “Such a difference one kindness makes.” Thank You! B.J.

Pardee Hospital Foundation Donors are Making Their Rounds
Monday, February 22nd, 2010On Monday, February 8, a group of Pardee Hospital Foundation donors took part in the first ever “Making Rounds” tour of the orthopedic unit and even experienced a trip to the operating room to view a live surgery. The donors were each members of the Foundation’s Generations of Excellence Society. The tour was created as a way for Pardee Hospital Foundation donors to get a look at what goes on behind the scenes at Pardee. This tour specifically focused on the orthopedic unit where the donors in attendance where able to see equipment that their previous donations had purchased as well as learn about the needs in the current orthopedic renovation. Dr. Amal K. Das, Jr. allowed the group into his operating room for a once-in-a-lifetime sneak peek at a joint replacement surgery. Howard Carl, Jr., a member of the Pardee Hospital Foundation Finance Committee, was particularly interested in this surgery as he had previously had a similar joint replacement surgery. “One of the most amazing things to me was learning how much money was needed for all of the equipment utilized during surgery,” Carl said after seeing all of the state-of-the-art equipment used during joint replacements. Generation’s donor, Stan Massie, was fascinated while watching the live surgery, “I loved it, if I could have stayed for the entire surgery, I would have.” The tour was guided by Debbie Patrick, director of development for the Pardee Hospital Foundation and Eileen Stepp, nursing director of Surgical Services. Future Making Rounds tours are planned for dates throughout this year, if you would be interested in attending, contact the Pardee Hospital Foundation at (828) 696-4666.

Pardee’s Center for Joint Replacement celebrates 10th anniversary
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010Pardee’s Joint Replacement Center recently celebrated 10 years of providing thorough pre- and post-operative care and a unique “Joint Camp” experience for patients. On Monday, Feb. 1 Pardee celebrated with a Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting, tours and refreshments. Last year more than 500 joint replacement surgeries were performed at Pardee Hospital. Pardee is building on the success of the Joint Center by developing an Orthopedic Center of Excellence. The expansion plans include five new patient rooms, an expanded group physical therapy space and a new salon and massage room. In addition, keeping patient comfort and care in mind, the entire orthopedics unit will undergo an interior renovation. “We celebrated the fact that we have had a successful Joint Center for ten years. We also recently welcomed several orthopedic physicians including a spine surgeon to our medical staff. But just as important, we wanted to celebrate the new journey we are taking to expand, renovate and develop this center into a medical tourism destination for orthopedics,” said Debbie Patrick, development director of Pardee Hospital Foundation. “Pardee consistently benchmarks among the top orthopedics programs in the nation.” Close to one hundred physicians, area executives, government officials, Chamber members and associates attended the celebration. This summer, a large community event is being planned once the renovations and expansion have been completed.
