Breast cancer support group holds Celebration of Life ceremony

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Pardee’s breast cancer support group, Breast Friends Forever, held a special Celebration of Life ceremony on Oct. 27 at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Pardee.  This was the second annual ceremony which celebrates women who have overcome issues related to breast cancer and survivorship.

Kristy Capps, Breast Care Navigator and support group facilitator, led the group of 28 women in a special balloon release using biodegradable balloons.  Attendees were also treated to manicures and pedicures, performed by cosmetology students from Blue Ridge Community College and chair massages by local massage therapists, Jennifer Chason and Joy Young.

“Cancer is not a battle that is won in a single day.  It is an intense voyage that can cause those in its path to become exhausted and grow weary.  The Celebration of Life is an annual event to reenergize and reinvigorate our breast cancer survivors.  We do our very best to make our survivors feel special and genuinely cared for by providing a relaxing, celebratory environment.  This event is a great way to collectively allow these amazing women to celebrate life and the blessings of each day,” said Kristy Capps,

RN III, BSN, CBPN-IC, Breast Care Navigator at the Elizabeth Reilly Breast Center at Pardee.

The Breast Friends Forever support group meets monthly at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Pardee and is open to women who currently have breast cancer or have previously been treated for the disease. Pardee encourages women to schedule their annual mammogram for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Elizabeth Reilly Breast Center at Pardee encourages women who are 40 years of age or older, or women with a family history of breast cancer to schedule their annual mammogram.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime.  The American Cancer Society states that early detection of breast cancer by mammography can lead to a greater range of treatment options.

“The two greatest risk factors for developing breast cancer are age and being female.  Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about these specific risks but we can be proactive and go for our yearly, screening mammograms,” said Kristy Capps, RN III, BSN, CBPN-IC, Breast Care Navigator at the Elizabeth Reilly Breast Center at Pardee.

“Early detection is our best protection.  Just a few, quick minutes can be lifesaving.”

Women who receive their annual mammogram at Elizabeth Reilly Breast Center at Pardee during the month of October will be entered to win one of 20 spa gift baskets.

To schedule an annual mammogram at the Elizabeth Reilly Breast Center at Pardee, please call (828) 698-7334.

The Elizabeth Reilly Breast Center is a division of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Pardee Hospital, a comprehensive cancer program accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.  The Elizabeth Reilly Breast Center is also one of 17 breast centers in the nation and the only breast center in North Carolina to be recognized as a Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence in the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program (NQMBC).  The center offers a full range of advanced treatment and diagnostic services, performed by highly qualified cancer specialists.  Services include surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, advanced radiology and laboratory diagnostic support and clinical treatment trials.  Community education programs, cancer screenings, support groups and holistic patient and family support are available.
