Steve Crane, M.D., assumes Full Professor status with the Department of Family Medicine at UNC-CH

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

Steve Crane, M.D., of Pardee Flat Rock Family Health Center and Pardee Hendersonville Family Health Center, received the status of Full Professor with the Department of Family Medicine with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH).

“I am grateful and honored by this recognition from UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine. I will do my best to live up to the high standards of this excellent institution,” said Steve Crane, M.D.

The Full Professors’ Committee within the Department of Family Medicine at UNC-CH unanimously voted for Crane to be promoted to Full Professor in February. The letter from the committee stated, “Your letters of support attest to your national reputation, your expertise in designing novel approaches to primary health care delivery, your extraordinary community service, and your emerging scholarship.”

Health Campus Fact Check 2

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

In Commissioner O’Connor’s blog post, http://district-5.livejournal.com/3598.html, he stated that:

Statement: “…When I became a member of the Board of Commissioners (BOC), I found that Pardee’s management and trustees were rushing to enter into an agreement as a very junior partner to Mission…”

Fact: Pardee will own equal shares of the Health Campus management organization with Mission. This is stated in the Letter of Understanding that has been reviewed by Mr. O’Connor multiple times.

Statement: “…I say rushing, because every conversation with the trustees emphasized the need to finish quickly because of the amount of time already spent planning, never because of a business case or for any benefit to Pardee or the taxpayers who own it..”

Fact: Since September 2010, the Mission Pardee Health Campus has been discussed publically and with the County Commissioners.

Statement: “A majority of the Commissioners insisted that the deal be renegotiated with our direction to make it a true 50/50 partnership..”

Fact: Pardee will own equal shares of the Health Campus management organization with Mission. This is stated in the Letter of Understanding that has been reviewed by Mr. O’Connor.

Statement: “That Commissioners duty of oversight includes asking questions and getting answers no matter how inconvenient and uncomfortable or diversionary the trustees and CEO find them to be. If their answers are not responsive to the concerns, the questions will continue.”

Fact: Pardee Hospital, the Pardee Hospital Board of Trustees, UNC Health Care, and the legal counsel of Pardee and that of the County Commissioners’ have all been available to answer any questions that any of the  Commissioners’ may have.

Statement: “I have in fact grown more alarmed at each iteration of the continually changing memo that passes for a contract between our hospital and Mission..”

Fact: The final version of the Letter of Understanding included comments made by the Board of Commissioners and their county attorney. It was offered for review to all 5 commissioners with their county attorney present; 4 of the 5 commissioners reviewed the document prior to it being signed in January.

Statement: “A key bone of contention is the ownership of the real estate under the project. Mission simply refuses to settle on a simple 50/50 ownership by the partners directly. It has invented one twisted proposal after another to avoid simple joint ownership of the real estate, ostensibly to keep the BOC at arm’s length since they are politicians, you know.”

Fact: Again, ownership opportunities exist for the land, the building, and the management organization for the health campus. Pardee will own equal shares of the Health Campus management organization with Mission. This is stated in the Letter of Understanding that has been reviewed by Mr. O’Connor.

Statement: “The health care of all hereabouts will suffer without the vibrant, free, three way competition among the medically superior facilities we now have.”

Fact: Whatever Health Care Reform brings to the residents of our region, there will be a newly insured population. Estimates in our area exceed 17,000 newly insured individuals. The current health care infrastructure is not prepared for this increase, without the Health Campus.  Free competition still exists among the local health care organizations with or without the health campus – we are simply offering our residents another choice to receive high quality healthcare in the rapidly growing Fletcher community.

Health Campus Fact Check 1

Monday, April 9th, 2012

As your community hospital, it is our duty to keep you informed of hospital news and to be transparent about our initiatives. We want to address some inaccuracies that were in the public today regarding Pardee and our Health Campus project with Mission Hospitals.

In Commissioner Young’s Be Our Guest editorial, in www.blueridgenow.com he stated that:

Statement: “…Several months ago when the joint venture between Mission Hospital and Pardee Hospital was started at the county line..”

Fact: This occurred on September 7, 2010. The link to the board minutes is here, on page six.

Statement: “…The Board of Commissioners voted unanimously that Pardee would own 50 percent of the property, 50 percent of the facility and 50 percent of the business.”

Fact: The vote was not unanimous. On September 21, 2011, Chairman Edney made the motion that the Board authorizes the Pardee Board to move forward with negotiations but with the understanding that approval of the Joint Venture is subject to final legal documents. The motion passed 4-1 with Commissioner O’Conner voting nay. The link to the board minutes is here, on page nine.

Statement: “As of this date, all we have received from the hospital board is a memorandum of understanding that is not a legally binding agreement.”

Fact: This is the only agreement that Pardee Hospital has signed. The other documents are currently in progress.

Micromanagement Hinders Mission Pardee Health Campus

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

A letter from Jay Kirby, our President and CEO, was published in today’s Times-News, Be Our Guest column.

“As a new resident of Mills River and Henderson County and new CEO of Pardee Hospital, I have had the opportunity over the past few months to view the challenges we face from a fresh perspective. While there is no doubt that our county commissioners will play an important role in the future of Pardee Hospital, it is important to consider what that role is.

That is why I read with great interest the Times-News editorial of March 24, “Time to see fine print for joint project.” That editorial outlined concerns from both the editorial board of the Times-News and a minority of Henderson County commissioners who are continually raising concerns about a joint agreement Pardee and Mission hospitals entered into to better serve the patients of Fletcher.”

Words of Thanks

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Pardee was recently highlighted in Times-News Words of Thanks section for patient-centered care while a patient was undergoing surgery.

“Dear Community:  I recently had surgery at Pardee Hospital-Outpatient Department. Because of an earlier hospital experience, I was extremely nervous to have the surgery in spite of being in Dr. Eisenhauer’s capable hands.

The story is one I would like to share before of the TLC received by incredibly sensitive and caring people at Pardee Hospital- especially Melissa and Sherry, who made a difficult and fearful time a lot easier.

Thank you Pardee and big “thank yous” to Melissa and Sherry”
