Pardee welcomes Shawn Fiora, FNP, to the Pardee Pain Center

Pardee is proud to announce Shawn Fiora, FNP, has recently joined the Pardee Pain Center and is affiliated with the Comprehensive Pain Consultants of the Carolinas.

Fiora received her Master of Science and completed her Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) from Wright State University, located in Dayton, Ohio. Fiora is board-certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

The Pardee Pain Center provides treatment for chronic pain and diseases of the spine and is located within Pardee Hospital. The medical director, Edward A. Lewis, M.D., is board-certified in both anesthesiology and pain medicine. The Pain Center offers a variety of treatment options for chronic pain and diseases of the spine including x-ray guided diagnostic and therapeutic injections, medical management, facet, sacroiliac and nerve root blocks, spinal cord stimulation and opioid management.

Sarah Bentley, BSN, RN-BC, receives national certification in Gerontology Nursing

Sarah Bentley, BSN, RN-BC, recently received national certification in Gerontology Nursing through the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Bentley has been employed with Pardee for three years and provides exceptional in-patient and out-patient care for the medical/oncology unit. She serves as a charge nurse as well as precepts student nurses and newly hired nurses.  She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Gardner-Webb University, located in Boiling Springs, N.C.   Bentley is nationally certified in both medical/surgical nursing and gerontological nursing and she is chemotherapy certified. She is a member of the Magnet Task Force at Pardee and attended the 2011 National Magnet Conference in Baltimore, Md. Bentley was also recognized as Pardee Hospital’s Employee of the Year in 2011.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association and provides resources to nursing individuals and organizations to achieve excellence in their specialty nursing practices.

UNC Cancer Network attends Pardee Hospital’s cancer conference to introduce new clinical trials for local cancer patients

The University of North Carolina Cancer Network visited Pardee Hospital at the end of December 2011 to meet with Pardee’s Cancer research staff and physicians to discuss additional clinical trials here for local cancer patients.

“Participation in clinical trials is an opportunity for patients to receive the most-advanced cancer treatment, and at the same time, make a real difference for patients who will be diagnosed with cancer in coming years.  Pardee has a long record of making this opportunity a reality for our patients, and the partnership with the UNC Cancer Network will expand those opportunities, bringing our patients state-of-the-art treatment close to where they live and work,” said James Radford, M.D., principal investigator for the cancer clinical trials program at Pardee.

Currently, Pardee is offering 52 clinical trials. Pardee’s partnership with UNC Cancer Network will result in additional clinical trials available to patients locally at Pardee. These additional will be a benefit to both the patients and the physicians, and will help Pardee’s Comprehensive Cancer Center maintain national standards.

As a nationally recognized cancer treatment and research facility, the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Pardee is dedicated to using the latest technology and innovative therapies.  The Cancer Center hosts community education programs, support groups, provides cancer screenings and holistic support and care for patients and their families dealing with cancer.

Shirley Vernon, RN, retires from Pardee after 54 dedicated years of service

Shirley Vernon, RN, a registered nurse at Pardee Urgent Care, has retired after 54 dedicated years of service in nursing.

Vernon has been with Pardee for 23 years working at both the main hospital and at Pardee Urgent Care.  She received her nursing degree in 1957 from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, located in Pittsburg, Pa.  Vernon has worked in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities in Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, and previously served at Kent Nursing Home in Kent, N.Y., before coming to Pardee Hospital in 1988.

“Shirley is an outstanding individual who is very caring and compassionate.  She is a pleasure to work with and she will be missed.  She is a professional who has given many years to her chosen vocation,” said Sherry Thompson, Interim Director at Pardee Urgent Care.

Julie Gephardt, BSN, RN, receives national certification in Gerontological Nursing

Julie Gephardt, BSN, RN, recently received national certification in Gerontological Nursing through the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Gephardt has been employed with Pardee since 2010, and serves as a staff nurse on the telemetry/step down floor where she takes care of critically ill patients who require 24 hour telemetry monitoring.  She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C.

Pardee Welcomes Cara Douglass, D.O. to Pardee Internal Medicine Associates

Pardee is proud to announce Cara Douglass, D.O., has recently joined its medical staff and is currently accepting patients at Pardee Internal Medicine Associates, located at 705A Sixth Ave. West in Hendersonville.

Dr. Douglass received her doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and also completed the St. Vincent’s Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program in Toledo, Ohio.  Dr. Douglass is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and the American College of Physicians.

Pardee’s Breast Center award :: 1 of 17 in nation

Elizabeth Reilly Breast Center at Pardee has been recognized as a Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence in the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program (NQMBC).  This is the first breast center in North Carolina to receive this recognition and is one of 17 in the nation.

This superior honor is the highest level at which a breast center can be certified and recognizes the Elizabeth Reilly Breast Center at Pardee’s commitment to providing the highest level of quality breast healthcare to patients in their community.

Wound Center receives HBO Chambers

The Comprehensive Wound Healing Center at Pardee received two new Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers (HBO) yesterday. The whole department is working very hard preparing for the opening of their new center. They had visitors in from another Diversified Clinical Services Wound Healing Center in Shelby, NC helping them set up and sharing knowledge with the group. They are hopeful to have the center open and be seeing patients the beginning part of September.
