Pardee Home Care receives words of thanks

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Our mother fell recently and within a week she was walking with the aid of her walker. Jennifer from Pardee’s Home Care came to the house regularly to start her on an exercise program.  We have been pleased with the therapy and the suggestions given and the care and concern of the home care team. Our dad has also used the services of Pardee Home Care and we appreciated the services and care that time also. Thank you all! Martha T. F.

Thank you to everyone involved in care

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

I was browsing blueridgenow.com this morning and saw the note posted below, from Wayne and Sheila McCall. We are happy that you had such a good experience, we are a tight-knit community and it is a privilege to be able to provide you with the healthcare that you deserve.

“Dear Community: My husband and I would like to thank everyone involved in the care for him during his tough times.

Thanks to Dr. Alan Verm for doing a thorough job during a regular eye exam and discovering the melanoma in his eye and getting us scheduled with a retina specialist who referred us to Duke Medical Center. Before being able to go to Duke, Wayne fell and broke his hip during the last snow storm. We would like to thank everyone who helped him at Pardee Hospital.

We have a very special thank you to Dr. Brian Seng for the wonderful job he did replacing the hip. His care, concern and professionalism were above and beyond anyone could expect. Also thanks to Dr. David Mackel and Dr. Paul Walker and their terrific office staff.

We also want to let those who called, came to visit, sent cards and just kept us in their thoughts and prayers it meant a lot to us both. Thanks to everyone and your thoughtfulness will always be remembered.”

Prenatal care takes an innovative twist

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Barbara Davenport, a certified nurse-midwife with Pardee Nurse-Midwifery,  wrote an article about Centering Pregnancy, a new model of prenatal care in groups.  The article, in it’s entirety, can be viewed by clicking on Times News, Be Our Guest column.  It was published in the newspaper today.  The following is an excerpt.

Centering Pregnancy is a model of prenatal care in groups that is changing the way people think about obstetrical care.  The model has three components: health care assessment, education, and support. It’s provided in a group facilitated by a credentialed healthcare provider and a co-facilitator.  Instead of traditional visits one-to-one with a physician or midwife, a small group of pregnant women and their provider come together on a regular basis for their prenatal visit in a group setting.

Women enter centering groups after three months of pregnancy, when initial lab tests and pelvic exams have been completed.  By the time they are ready to deliver, they know everyone in their group like old friends.  Many times they continue to get together even after their babies are born.

“Pregnant women wonder if the changes going on in their body are normal and want information about how to stay healthy.  It’s hard to address everything in the typical fifteen minute appointment.  Women also need to connect with other women going through pregnancy, to learn from each other,” says Vicki Fleury, MSN, CNM, and co-facilitator of the groups. “Centering is the perfect place to do that since we have two hours together each month.”

15th Annual Tournament of Champions a Success

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

The 15th Annual Pardee Foundation Tournament of Champions took place on Monday, May 17, at Kenmure Golf and Country Club. The event raised $93,236.88 to assist with the planned renovations to Pardee Hospital’s nationally recognized orthopedic unit.

This year’s event featured a new 9-hole tournament in the morning with 27 golfers, followed by the traditional 18-hole tournament in the afternoon with a full field of 130 players. More than 40 volunteers ensured that the event ran smoothly. This event has raised more than $1 million since 1996 to support Pardee Hospital facilities, equipment and programs.

Proceeds from the tournament will help fund planned renovations to Pardee’s orthopedic unit which is consistently benchmarked among other top orthopedic programs in the nation. These renovations include upgrades to the current 25 patient rooms and the addition of five patient rooms, enlargement of group therapy space, equipment purchases for orthopedic surgeries and a new conference area. All of these renovations will support the growth in orthopedic and spine procedures to address the growing needs of our community.

Gladys Nesbitt, nursing director of orthopedics at Pardee Hospital, said, “As the number of patients in our Joint Camp program has steadily increased, it has become readily apparent that our facilities at Pardee need to be expanded and renovated. These changes will allow us to offer even more services to patients who chose our destination for their surgical needs.”

Thank you to the many sponsors, volunteers, committee members, golfers, and staff who made this event such a great success.
