Dr. Crane gets an A+ from a recent patient visit

H1N1 Flu Vaccines Still Available

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the H1N1 influenza strain continues to affect younger adults in disproportionate numbers, particularly those with underlying medical conditions. High risk groups include pregnant women, people with chronic illness, children and young adults up to 24 years of age, and the caregivers of young children.

Contact your physician to schedule an appointment if you would like a vaccine and have not yet received one this season. If you do not have a physician, please call 1-866-790-WELL to find a physician. You can also contact the Henderson County Health Department at 694-4040 Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon to speak with someone about scheduling an appointment for a free vaccine.

More than 80 million people in the United States have been vaccinated. In North Carolina, more than 1.6 million doses have been administered, impacting approximately 20% of our population. Don’t forget to participate in respiratory etiquette such as covering your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing and observing the proper hand washing techniques.

Pardee presents Shooting Star Awards

Pardee Hospital presented Shooting Star awards in March to Angela Hollingsworth, R.N., of 1 West and Debbie Gibbs, L.P.N., of 1 West. The Shooting Star Award recognizes Pardee associates who consistently go above and beyond in their jobs and serve as role models to their fellow associates. Winners are nominated by their co-workers to receive the award. Hollingsworth’s co-workers say she consistently shows up for work with a positive attitude and a smile for everyone. They say her caring nature and compassion are unsurpassed as recognized by the many cards and letters she receives from patients and families. She is extremely organized and instructs new graduate nurses and newly hired nurses to 1 West. Hollingsworth recently became an ACLS Instructor, and holds two national certifications in PCCN – Progressive Critical Care Nursing and Med-Surg. Gibb’s co-workers say that her positive attitude, tireless work ethic and helpful nature are commendable. She has an excellent bedside manner and is a true team player. They say Gibbs is very knowledgeable and always willing to help out when and wherever needed and that her vast experience and knowledge make her an invaluable resource.

The Henderson County Red Cross is celebrating American Red Cross Month by offering free CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) classes to the community on Saturday, March 13. Red Cross chapters throughout the Western N.C. region are waiving the normal $35 class fee for on day only on “CPR Saturday.”

“We know that CPR saves lives and this CPR Saturday gives us the opportunity to introduce those valuable life-saving skills to more people than ever,” said Mike Williams, Henderson County Chapter executive director. “ “Pardee Hospital is demonstrating their commitment to our community and to safety preparedness by sponsoring our CPR Saturday. Together, we’re committed to helping more people be prepared to save a life if necessary.”

Classes will be held at a total of 15 locations throughout the region, including four sites in Hendersonville. Spanish classes will also be available. Interested persons should call (828) 693-5605 or their local Red Cross office for more information on times, location, types of classes and reservations. Susan Lawrence Becomes OHC Certified

Susan Lawrence, R.N., COHC, occupational health nurse at Pardee Urgent Care, recently became a certified occupational hearing conservationist (COHC). The certification process involves a series of application steps and verification, completion of a Council of Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC) approved course, followed by rigorous training. This credentialing is prudent to demonstrate competency in OSHA requirements. The credential establishes a high level of training and practice.

CAOHC is an organization dedicated to the establishment and maintenance of training standards for those who safeguard hearing in the workplace. CAOHC training is done by certified course directors, follows a specific time and content outline, and is pre-registered with the agency. The initial course requires 20 contact hours of lecture and practicum. CAOHC certification offers the occupational hearing conservationist (OHC) credibility and also serves as verification that the conservationist has been trained to the highest standards.

For the most part, an occupational hearing conservation program focuses on noise because it is the most prevalent agent that causes hearing loss in the workplace. More than 18 million workers are exposed to harmful levels of noise. Noise is the only agent that has regulations to prevent it from causing hearing loss. Learning about noise and its effect upon hearing are extremely important elements in occupational hearing conservation.

Pardee is proud to announce that Jack Flippo, M.D., a pediatrician, recently joined Rainbow Pediatrics, and Shannon Dowler, M.D., a family medicine physician, recently joined Blue Ridge Community Health Services

Dr. Flippo received his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Ala. He completed his residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. Dr. Flippo is board certified in pediatrics and is on the active medical staff at Pardee Hospital. Dr. Flippo, his wife and two children moved to Hendersonville from Charlotte in January. He has a special interest in pediatric acute care.

Dr. Dowler received her medical degree from the East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. She completed her residency at MAHEC Family Medicine Residency in Asheville, N.C. Dr. Dowler is board certified in family practice and is on the active/non-admitting medical staff at Pardee Hospital. She lives in Asheville with her husband and two children and has a special interest in youth health education.
